Free grants and scholarship are available for students who want to pursue further education.

The U.S. Department of Education shelled out more than $67 billion in loans, free grants and scholarship and campus-based aid (another form of free grants and scholarship) to qualified students who wanted to pursue tertiary education.

The Federal Pell Grant is one of the many free grants and scholarship schemes that could help students realize their dreams of pursuing college education. A Federal Pell Grants scholarship could reach a maximum of $3,300.

Pell grants and scholarships are based on the financial need of the student. Aside from that the free grants ands scholarship amount will also depend on the costs to attend school, studentís status whether it is full or part time, and the studentís plan to pursue a full academic year or less.

Federal Pell Grantsí scholarships are paid directly to the student by the school once in each semester, trimester or quarter.

Campus-based aid programs like the Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG), Federal Work-Study (FWS) and Federal Perkins Loan are other sources for free grants and scholarships.

These free grants and scholarship program consists of federal funds given directly to schools and distributed to students based on the studentís financial need, amount of other grants and scholarships the student receives and total funds available in school.

To apply for free grants and scholarship in the campus-aid program, you need to comply with a number of eligibility requirements. Among these eligibility requirements are:

* Has a financial need
* he or she can produce a valid high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) certificate, or pass an approved ďability testĒ by the U.S. Department of Education
* studying towards an attaining a degree or certificate
* enrolled in an eligible program
* should be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen with valid Social Security Number (SSN)
* an optional registration with Selective Service
* maintain good academic standing in school

Even if you are note eligible for the federal free grants and scholarship program, you should still fill in the Free Application for Federal Student aid because you may still be eligible for various non-federal aids from states and private institutions.
